A problem that customers occasionally encounter while reloading, is that of cases being scratched in the reloading dies. There can be many reasons for this condition to occur, but they are usually traceable to the level of cleanliness of both the dies and the cases. Generally speaking, almost all instances of case scratching can be traced to foreign material that becomes imbedded in/or adheres to the inside surfaces of the die itself.

One of the most frequently heard questions we hear at Creedmoor Sports is,
“Should I neck size or full-length size?” There is no proven right or wrong answer or at least one that has documented statistically valid data backing it up. You’ll often see guys showing results after shooting only 4 or 5 groups. This usually does not present enough data and is not a blind study, meaning the tester can probably tell which is which from bolt closure and can subconsciously influence the results. Regardless, I’ll be glad to give you my thoughts on the matter.

A case gauge, such as the ones by L.E. Wilson, is an essential tool for checking ammunition. It quickly verifies whether a cartridge or case will fit your rifle’s chamber, saving handloaders time and frustration at the range. To ensure accurate measurements, follow these simple rules:

  1. Keep the gauge clean: The tight tolerances in the gauge demand cleanliness. Before use, run a patch through it to remove any debris. After your reloading session, clean it again with a patch and a touch of gun oil to prevent corrosion.
  2. Avoid using thumb pressure: Resist the temptation to use your thumb to seat the round, as it can lead to false readings due to the thumb’s strength. Instead, hold the gauge in one hand and gently apply pressure to the case head with the side of your pointer finger. If it doesn’t seat flush, there’s an issue.
  3. Use it regularly: When setting up your dies, use the case gauge at every step to ensure proper sizing, bullet seating, and crimping. This approach guarantees that your finished rounds will pass the final gauge check, minimizing scrap ammunition.

Handloaders typically use two gauges: a case gauge for checking case dimensions and a cartridge gauge for inspecting loaded cases. Both can assess chamber fit, but only a cartridge gauge checks the entire cartridge, including the bullet. The choice between them is yours, but a case gauge is a minimum requirement as it checks measurements that calipers can’t easily handle.

You just received your new Bore Tech order and are excited to clean your firearm. You did your research to ensure that you purchased the proper gear, knowing that everything should work flawlessly. You begin to push your first patch down the barrel and you notice it is extremely tight and then it jams! How can this be?

The avid shooter wants to accurately place shots in the center of the target. The closer to the center the better the result but NOT when it comes to correctly using jags and patches.

A commonly overlooked solution to remedy the frustrating occurrences of overly tight or jammed patches is what we like to call “Side Spiking”. Side Spiking is super simple and works!

As the name suggests, “Side-Spiking” is simply moving your spiking position from the center of the patch towards the corner of a square patch or the edge of a round patch. (See Figure 1)

Figure 1: Moving From Center Spiking To Side Spiking

The closer toward the edge of the patch you spike your jag, the looser the patch will be when pushed down the bore.

Important:

Be careful to not go to the very edge of the patch. Leave enough patch material to cover the first set of rings on your jag as this insures your jag is properly centered in the bore and that no contact with the rifling will occur. (See Figure 2)

Figure 2: Proper Side Spiking Location

We recommend side spiking all wet patches. This allows for a looser patch in the bore which removes gross powder fouling and leaves more cleaning solution behind to start working on the remaining fouling.

When a tighter patch is needed, simply move your spike closer toward the center of the patch. The closer to the center of the patch you get, the tighter the patch will become in the bore. The objective is to have a snug fitting patch that allows you to smoothly push your rod down the bore. Remember you do not need to end up in the center of the patch!

Check out this Patch Size Selection Chart for proper patch sizing guidance.

The Soup Can Rifle Rest is a rear rest bag that allows you to adjust your vertical position on a target when shooting off a bipod or a front rest bag, by giving the Soup Can Rifle Rest a squeeze. Using the Soup Can Rifle Rest allows you to take some human error out of your bench shooting by allowing you to not use muscle to hold the gun on target. These bags come overfilled, allowing you to remove fill through the Velcro opening to get it to the perfect height for your specific needs.

Are you tired of the front of your mat curling upward, causing your ammo box to tip over, and just getting in the way? When folding your shooting mat, it’s important to always fold over the front quarter or third of the mat first. Then, you can proceed rolling it up, starting at the fold. This will make your mat want to curl downward, causing it to actually become more flat.

Spotting scopes and spotting scope stands are a shooting staple, allowing shots to be called from the comfort of your shooting position. This has saved many a shooter from long, silent, and usually awkward walks down the range to mark hits and commiserated over misses. In a time where we demand instant feedback, spotting scopes and spotting scope stands work in tandem to deliver the quick validation of your scores, and sharp rebuke from coaches the world over.

To the elation of shooters everywhere we are seeing the price of quality optics come down. Shooters can afford to employ optics with larger objectives, generating clearer and brighter pictures, at higher magnifications. However, the pain is not solely felt in the wallet, the larger scopes use larger lenses, making the spotting scope heavier, which shifts the scope stands center of gravity (CG) higher. While there is no adverse effect in prone, the shift in CG can drastically reduce the stability of the spotting scope stand when the scope is raised for use in a standing position. A brush or bump that impacts the stand, or even a gust of wind can disturb the picture sufficiently to miss that bullet strike, or at worse, cause the stand to tip causing everything including your $3,000 spotting scope to hit the ground.

There is a simple fix to this, add weight to the base of your stand. Whether it is a sandbag, or the convenient Spotting Scope Stand weights that we produce, the additional weight lowers the CG of the stand which drastically increases the stability of the stand. This dampens the effects of wind, or accidental brushes with the scope stand resulting in a more stable, easier to read picture. There is no doubt about it, today’s quality optics give you a competitive edge, and a properly stabilized spotting scope stand with weights will further protect and hone that edge.

“As matches become less common during the next few months, now is the perfect time to do what a lot of people never even think about, cleaning your hardback coat. We have found that a mild detergent, such as dawn dish soap and a nylon brush work wonders on stains and, most importantly, smells in your hardback. To clean your coat, brush in small circles throughout your coat. Let it air dry. Do not take your coat to a dry cleaner or put it in your washing machine, as this can ruin the integrity of the coat’s hardback materials. Also, the chemicals used may damage the non-slip rubber material. If your coat has leather, use a leather cleaner to wipe the leather clean, but you can still use soapy water on the inside of your coat. It’s never a bad idea to use a leather conditioner on your coat to prolong the life of the leather.”

“If you often shoot from a bench, tail gate, picnic table, or other similarly flat and hard surfaces, you will know the pain of trying to support your rifle on your elbows. Not only can it be downright painful for those with boney elbows, but it is also unstable. Even if you don’t have a muzzle heavy rifle, odds are that you are working far too hard to get even a halfway decent group. That’s where a good shooting bag comes in. Let the bag do all the work of supporting the weight of your rifle so you can focus on the things that really matter – life, liberty, and that perfect trigger press. A good front bag will mold around the front of the rifle and hold it in position allowing the shooter to provide the precise Kentucky windage while a good rear bag allows for easy adjustment of elevation simply by squeezing or relaxing the bag. Shooting off a set of bags is the bare minimum anyone should do when checking sights, load performance, or zeroing a scope.
Never used a bag before? Start with a quality front bag that supports the front of the rifle and allows your off hand to take a break.
Shoot from the bipod? Give a rear bag a try and give that lazy offhand something to do by helping stabilize elevation adjustments. Shoot better groups with a lot less work and – most importantly – less elbow pain!”
